Getting Rid of Popcorn Ceilings

If you have recently bought a home that you’re planning on fixing it up, then you might have a couple of items on your list to do. If you have bought a home that is from the 60’s or 70’s then you might be battling some popcorn and it’s the kind that you don’t eat. We are talking about popcorn ceilings. These types of things can be either relatively easy or a complete pain. We want to help you make the right decision about taking on such a large project. EnergySmart NewHomes knows what a modern home looks like and the work that would need to go into making an older home look modern.

Before you can even start on this lengthy project, you’re going to want to get your popcorn ceiling tested for asbestos. This is an important test to get done because of the implication that this can cause if you proceed and it does in fact have that in it. Asbestos is known to cause lung cancer. So, if it is tested and comes back positive then you will have to come up with a plan B. If it is negative, then we can go onto the next step.

The first thing that you’re going to want to do is to do a scrape test. This will help you to know what you’re up against. Take a wide scraper like a putty knife and give it a go in a small area. After you have done that, then you can try it a second time by dampening it with water. This will either do nothing or it will help soften the texture mixture, making the scraping easier. If the water did nothing, then the first scrape test is what you’re looking at when it comes to difficulty level.

After you have preformed the scrape test and have decided to go through with it then its time to get things cooking. Take the time to set up tarps. As you scrape, you’re going to have a lot of dust going everywhere so there is really no way to have too much protection and tarp to keep it all enclosed. That is unless you love to clean up dust storms around the entire house.
