1. Change Your Shower Head

We all take shower or baths. It’s just a fact of life that we must keep ourselves clean so you might not think that you can save money this way but with thanks to today’s technology we can. High-efficient showerheads can save a family of four about $50 a month. This savings amounts to $600 a year. Replacing your old shower head with a new one is very inexpensive and easy to install. In fact, depending on the shower head you get, it will pay for itself in the first month.

2. Insulate Your Water Heater

Most water heaters are set to 140 degrees by default. If you drop it down to 120 degrees and wrap an insulating blanket around it you can save on your utility bill. In addition to this insulate the first 3-6 feet of the hot and cold water piping. Whether you have an electric water heater or a gas one it will help save on your utility bill. This is because most water heaters in people’s homes have a tank and they contain hot water in them for when you want or need it. Insulating the hot heater will help reduce how much heat you lose as it sits there or travels to the desired destination.

3. Plant Trees!

This one takes some time to get the savings out of it but it will help in the long run. This will particularly help you save money in the summer. Plant trees that shade the windows so that you don’t have to run the air condition very much, if at all. Additionally, you want to plant trees more on the south and west sides of your home along with around your air conditioning unit. This alone will save you about $250 a year or more. Planting trees and waiting for them to grow takes time but it is worth it for the saving in the long run. Not to mention the beautiful landscape you will have.

Living green takes a bit of time and money to put into it but in the end, it will help save you money and it will be better for the environment.
