How to Identify Water Damage

Do you hear what sounds like water running behind the walls in your home? This could be a sign that you have a water leak somewhere. If you do have a leak, it is imperative that you locate the leak and fix the damage before mold and housing damage develops. Here is how you can identify water damage so that you can fix the issue before it escalates.

Stains on the Walls or Ceiling

Stains on walls and ceilings are among the first signs that homeowners notice when it comes to water damage. If your drywall is painted a light color, this will look like brown rings and spots. If your drywall is painted a darker color, keep an eye out for building or sagging drywall.

Flaking or Peeling Paint

Moisture that seeps through drywall can also cause paint to peel or flake. This is because drywall is not waterproof, therefore it cannot contain water. Thus, when water is present for too long behind drywall, it will eventually break through the drywall and paint barrier both.

An Increased Water Bill

If you see a sudden jump in your water bill and you cannot think of why that might be, a leak could be a culprit. Because water leaks can go undetected for some time behind the scenes, a jump in your water bill could be a good first indicator that you have a problem on your hands.

Musty Smells or Visible Mold

The presence of excess moisture for long periods of time will lead to mold and mildew development. These bacteria are often accompanied by an off-putting odor. So, if you smell a musty smell in a certain room and then if you see black or green spots on the wall or ceiling, this is a good indicator that you have a water leak.
