How to Adopt Hygge into Your Routine

Winter is a time that many people dread. It is often too cold to do too many activities outside, there is less daylight, and it can generally be described as a dreary time of year. But the Danish have chosen to see this time of year as an opportunity for comfort instead of dread. They call this attitude hygge and we want to show you how you can adopt into your own life.

What is Hygge?

Hygge (pronounced hyoo-gah) is essentially a word that evokes feelings of coziness, relaxation, and general well-being. It is basically a mindset that celebrates the colder months as a time to reset and indulge in a little self-care. And since Denmark is consistently ranked as one of the happiest places on earth despite their long, dark, and cold winters, they must be on to something.

Hygge - How to Do It

Since hygge is just a way to embrace the winter season, here are a few ideas on how you can do just that.

Get Cozy

Creating a cozy atmosphere is a great first step in adopting the hygge state of mind. Putting on a fire, playing relaxing music, and lighting candles can all contribute to creating a restful space. In fact, lighting candles on its own can greatly influence your mood. Soft lighting along with uplifting scents can echo emotional memories and help you feel peaceful.

Enjoy Nature

Hygge is all about appreciating what you have at that moment. And while it can be cold, bundling up and getting into nature can have a very grounding effect. Just going on a walk and enjoying the beauty of fallen leaves mixed amongst the snow can have a powerful influence. Plus, this will give you a chance to bundle up in your coziest winter wear.

Connect with Loved Ones

Many families have a go-go-go lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with being busy, but Winter is a unique time when things tend to slow down. And while social media can be a great way to stay connected with loved ones who live afar, giving undivided attention to the loved ones you have near can go a long way in fostering feelings of contentment. Aim to use some of your evenings to be present with family and friends. Perhaps you can cook together, play a game, or just have a meaningful conversion. Savoring the relationships that are right in front of you is a great way to implement hygge.
